SRI patented Light-weight iGrinder® is designed for robot grinding, robot polishing and robot sanding of welding joints, casting, ceramic, plastics, etc. The floating grinder has axial compliance with constant force. Sensors that measure position, force and angle are integrated within the grinder, such that the grinding force, floating position and grinder posture can be feedbacked to the controller.

 

The robotic force control is greatly simplified since the iGrinder® control system is independent from the robot system. When performing a robot force controlled grinding or polishing process, the robot moves along the pre-determined tool path, and the force & position controls are accomplished through the iGrinder® controller. When the grinding force is set, iGrinder® will keep the constant grinding force regardless the robot posture. iGrinder® accepts various grinding tools - pneumatic orbital grinder, electrical spindle, angle grinder, straight grinder, belt sander, etc.

 

When compared to the classic robotic force control, iGrinder® is easier to use, and has faster response with higher accuracy, to achieve higher efficiency.  With iGrinder®, a robot grinding cell can be easily and quickly built, since the classic complex force control algorithms are no longer required.
